morning here on taylor street. it was about 3:30 a.m. police say a civilian vehicle, which according to police, was being driven at a high rate of speed, collided with a police cruiser. now, there were three occupants in this civilian vehicle. we're told that two have died. a third has been hospitalized, and two officers in the cruiser were also injured and hospitalized as well. according to the official information, what official information there is at this hour, the civilian vehicle, the driver of that vehicle lost control and collided with the police cruiser. and we've talked to folks who are familiar with this area, and they say that speed has been a problem here. >> i think it's been unaddressed for a long time. they should have put some speed humps or something to reduce the speed. people have complained about cars running the lights, pedestrians almost been ran over several times. so speed's been an issue for a long time. >> reporter: now, we don't have much information about the identity of the victims. we are told that the officers involved were from the 4th

"meet the press" moderator david gregory joined us earlier today. he says the white house is expecting a tough battle. >> well, i do think the president's in a strong position right now. i think there are some trends in the economy that are helpful for him. i think americans are a little bit more optimistic about the next five years. we saw that in our poll. but i don't think anybody expects this is going to be anything other than a tight race for re-election. i just think the economy being what it is, it almost guarantees that. i think what the white house hopes is that this nomination process on the right is going to ultimately weaken the nominee. >> and be sure to tune in to "meet the press" later today at 10:30. mitt romney supporter senator john mccain as well as newt gingrich supporter, former

senator fred thompson, will join david. obama campaign manager david axelrod, he will be on "meet the press" as well as a guest. mitt romney supporter john mccain will be there. mitt romney is causing a bit of controversy with his latest ad, but it has nothing to do with the ad's target, newt gingrich. nbc's tom brokaw is upset with the ad which features his 1997 report, the day gingrich was found guilty of ethics violations. nbc news and brokaw have both requested that all news material be removed from the ad. the romney campaign says they believe they still have the right to air it. the ad is scheduled to run through tuesday. well, president obama is making a case to change business as usual for lawmakers in washington. in his weekly address, he said he wants to ban them from profiting from their service. >> they should limit any elected official from owning stocks in industries they impact, and they

should make sure people who bundle campaign contributions for congress can't lobby congress, and vice versa. >> well, the president repeated a plea from his state of the union address, that he wants congress to pass legislation to ban insider trading. he also called on the senate to pass a rule requiring a yes-or-no vote on judicial and public service nominations within 90 days. organizers of the occupy d.c. protest plan to meet today to discuss their next move, as tomorrow they'll be forced out of one of their camps. u.s. park police went to the encampment at mcpherson square yesterday and once again told protesters they have to leave by tomorrow. the police will start enforcing rules that prohibit overnight camping in federal parks. organizers say they're considering a sleep strike to protest the police decision. and in oakland, protesters once again clashed with police,

with officers arresting around 100 demonstrators yesterday. earlier in the day, around 1,000 protesters fought with police who were forced to use tear gas and flash grenades on the crowd. the protesters then converged on city hall, breaking into the building and trying to destroy construction equipment. >> it's not a peaceful group. so, instead of dealing with so many other issues that we have in this city, calls for service where people really need police officers to respond, we've had to deal with this. >> at least three police officers were slightly injured in the clashes. well, it's time for our first look at the weather with chuck bell. >> yes, and the sun is shining out there. looks like it's going to be a great day today. we had some good weather earlier in the week as well, and i took advantage to go out and visit some school kids. you're looking at a beautiful picture over washington this morning. thursday i was at the capitol hill day school, and this is miss summers' class and they were extremely excited to have me there talking about the

weather. they've been doing their weather unit for months on end. i was supposed to show the picture yesterday, and i did not. so i don't get a gold star, i get a big red "x." they had great questions, all written out in advance. and we went around the room and made sure that everybody's questions were answered before i left. or before they went on to recess and lunch. great time. thanks for inviting me out there, everybody. we learned a lot about weather that day. we sure did. outside right now, temperatures are generally speaking on the mild side, by january standards, mostly in the 30s now, climbing up to near 40 degrees. it's going to be a good-looking day today. nothing's showing up on storm 4 radar at this point in time. we're waiting on a little chance of some precipitation coming in during this evening. currently, it's still way out towards chicago. it's still about 12 hours or so away from here, so that means between 7:00 and 11:00 this evening we'll be on the lookout. clouds will increase during the day. temperatures will zoom into the mid-to-upper 40s for highs before the clouds sneak back in. but don't worry, if you want to see more sunshine, there's more sunshine back for tomorrow and

still the mention of 60 degrees this week. we'll talk about that in a bit. >> a couple times over. >> yeah. >> all right, thanks, chuck. well, today, prince george's county police hope to learn the identity of a body recovered from the bottom of a well. crews got to the body late yesterday afternoon in ft. washington, maryland. it was then handed over to the medical examiner, who will try to identify the body. police from alexandria were also on the scene, as there is a possibility the body is that of lenny harris, an activist who disappeared in september. this morning, a man is in custody after a six-hour standoff with police. detectives say the man barricaded himself inside a car at the top of the fairfax county courthouse parking garage. investigators say he claimed to have weapons and threatened to hurt himself. officers swarmed in, blocking off roads and letting no one in the area. police negotiators were called in to help talk the man out. >> the negotiators were able to

convince the subject to surrender, which he did. and so, i'm happy to say that there are no injuries to him or to any of the participating officers. >> police say they also called in a bomb squad to check out the man's car. detectives have not said if they found any weapons. it is not clear if the man will face any charges. the police say a car going the wrong way caused a crash that killed four people in anne arundel county. we first told you about this accident yesterday morning. it happened on route 50 near davidsonville road. police say a car with three people in it was going westbound on route 50 and hit another driver head on. one of the cars caught fire. two 18-year-olds, breanna franco and zachary rose, were killed, along with 19-year-old brittany walker and 55-year-old terry davis. authorities near richmond are calling the deaths of a man and two young children suspicious. officers were called to a home in mechanicsville yesterday

afternoon and found the bodies inside. deputies say the man was 40 years old and the children were 3-year-old twins. the "richmond times-dispatch" is reporting the man is the girls' father. police won't say much about the nature of their deaths but do say there is no search for a suspect. well, today, fairfax county residents can get rid of some of their old appliances without much of a headache. the county is holding what it is calling an electric sunday. residents can recycle their old electronics to the i-66 transfer station on west ox road in fairfax between 10:00 this morning and 3:00 this afternoon. and best of all, the whole event is free. now, here are some of the items you can bring. televisions, computers as well as computer accessories, like keyboards, speakers and printers. you can also drop off unbroken fluorescent light bulbs and tubes. now, you may need to bring proof that you are a fairfax county

welcome back. this morning, fairfax county police are looking for two men who held up a bank. the pair robbed the m&t bank on maple avenue in vienna yesterday, just before noon. investigators say the guys implied they had a weapon but never actually showed one. police say one of the men gave a teller a note demanding money. the employee gave them cash and a dye pack. anyone who knows anything about this robbery, they're asked to contact fairfax county police. a discovery in the search for a missing toddler in maine this weekend may suggest foul play. police say they found blood in the home where ayla reynolds disappeared six weeks ago. her parents were seen in public together at a vigil for the girl yesterday. the child disappeared while staying at her father's house while the mother was getting out of rehab. reporters asked ayla's mother, trista reynolds, about the new developments. >> really? you really want to know? i'm ready to go knocking at

people's doors myself because i want to know what happened to my daughter, and i want to know where she is and who took her, or just whatever, like everybody else does. my reaction is i'm still trying to concept the fact that blood was found, of my daughter's. that's my reaction, okay? >> now, police have not confirmed that the blood found matched ayla's. police told the "boston globe," they feel that the three adults in the home when ayla disappeared are holding back information. the january jobs report is set to come out friday, and experts are expecting more good news. according to financial analysts, employers are expected to report they've added 100,000 to 225,000 jobs in the past month. they believe despite the new jobs, the unemployment rate will hold steady at 8.5%, the lowest it's been since early 2009. also later this week, federal reserve chairman ben bernanke will testify on the current state of the economy.

bernanke will speak in front of the house budget committee on thursday. this comes days after the u.s. central bank's announcement it will keep interest rates low because of the struggling economy. well, this morning, a greek debt deal is making a potentially devastating default look less likely. greece and investors who own its bonds reached a tentative deal to significantly reduce the country's debt. under the agreement, investors would exchange bonds for new ones worth 60% less but have a longer maturity and higher interest rate. negotiations will become final next week and help europe avoid a major blow to its weak financial system. online coupons have exploded in popularity recently, and people can get great deals on restaurants and clothes, and now, it appears, health care services. sites like groupon and livingsocial are starting to offer people deals for checkups and other services. consumers say it's a great way

dragon. organizers expect the lunar new year festival to draw more than 200,000 people over the weekend. >> we were out there yesterday. good times! well, some of you have shed your big coat with the mild temperatures this winter. others took off a whole lot more this weekend in maryland. this is the 16th annual polar bear plunge at sandy point state park. thousands broke out their swimwear and jumped into the chesapeake bay. even governor martin o'malley was among those who took a cold swim. this was actually a fund-raiser for the special olympics. there was also a super plunge, where 50 men and 50 women ran out into the chilly water every 24 hours. >> now, just to be bipartisan on this, in the past, former maryland governor bob ehrlich, who was a republican, also did that. >> they're both bold. >> great cause and a wonderful organization special olympics are, and if they can convince people to run into the icy-cold

it is 9:30, and welcome back to "news 4 today." i'm chris gordon. >> and i'm angie goff. we want to bring you the latest on a developing story out of northeast d.c. two people are dead after the car they were in collided with a police cruiser near the catholic university campus. two police officers were hurt in the crash. so was a third person in the civilian vehicle. all three people have been taken to the hospital. both police officers are expected to survive, but there's no word on the third victim's condition. we'll bring you more updates as they become available. and now to some of the morning's other top stories. prince george's county police are hoping to identify the body that was recovered from the

bottom of a ft. washington well. crews excavated the well and recovered the body late yesterday afternoon. there is speculation that the body belongs to lenny harris, an activist from alexandria who's been missing since september. fairfax county police have not said if a man will face charges after a six-hour standoff. investigators say he barricaded himself inside a car parked at the top of the fairfax county courthouse parking garage. police negotiators were able to talk him out. no one was hurt. just two days before the florida primary and newt gingrich picked up another endorsement. former presidential candidate herman cain announced his support for the former house speaker. the latest poll from reuters shows mitt romney has a double-digit lead over gingrich in the sunshine state. three people are dead after an suv tried to out-run a light rail train in california. cell phone video shows the scene moments after the accident

yesterday afternoon in sacramento. two adults and a baby in the suv all died. police say the driver ignored flashing warning lights and veered around a crossing arm. that's when the train hit the suv. it was going about 55 miles per hour. a woman in the suv survived but suffered serious injuries. six people on the light rail train were hurt but not badly. right now, the president of yemen is in the united states receiving medical treatment. president ali abdullah saleh suffered major illness during an assassination attempt last june. saleh was in a mosque praying when a bomb went off and he suffered severe burns and other injuries in the attack. he was president of yemen for 33 years before relinquishing power last november. the u.s. and other allies have pressured saleh to leave yemen permanently, but he has promised to return home for his country's elections in february. a united nations nuclear team has arrived in tehran.

they hope to address recent reports that the country has started developing nuclear weapons. leaders in iran say they're developing nuclear capabilities for energy purposes only. dozens of iranians protested the arrival of the team, saying it's the country's right to develop nuclear energy to help sustain its future. meanwhile, gas prices could soon skyrocket because of iran. officials there say the price of crude oil will go up to $150 a barrel. they are debating a ban on crude sales to european union countries as a response to a planned embargo on iran's oil. the entire standoff comes back to iran's supposed nuclear weapons program. angie? thanks, chris. there are new reports of clashes today between the syrian military and groups of army defectors. the crisis there has killed nearly 80 people since thursday, and peace talks could take longer now. the arab league that was

monitoring developments decided to withdrawal its observers, saying conditions were too dangerous to stay. one woman showed nbc news her home that she says was destroyed by syrian soldiers. area residents say the syrian army also set up a sniper's nest overlooking a village and is attacking people below. a deadly fire at a rehabilitation clinic in peru is under investigation this morning. investigators say 27 people died. peru's health minister says the patients at the christ is love center were forced to live like prisoners there. he also said the rehab clinic was unlicensed and overcrowded. fire investigators say there is speculation that a mattress was set on fire and that the fire was started during a fight. crews in italy have recovered another body from the capsized cruise ship, bringing the death toll to at least 17. meanwhile, rough seas forced officials to delay removing more than 500,000 gallons of fuel

from the ship. crews will try and remove the fuel some time later this week. so far, though, there has been no fuel leakage from the cruise ship, which crashed into a reef weeks ago. 16 people are still missing from the accident. meanwhile, american express is in hot water for sending out an advertisement featuring the recently crashed cruise ship, the "costa concordia." the ad, which was mailed out to cardholders, show cased a seven-night cruise touring italy, france and spain for $749. a spokesperson says the mailing was already under way when the accident happened two weeks ago and the company apologizes for any inconvenience. st. louis is the first city to hold a welcome home parade marking the end of the military mission in iraq. tens of thousands of people lined downtown streets to salute troops and veterans from across the country. for some, the parade was

wednesday evening as some cooler air comes back in, but cooler, not cold. rain drops, not snowflakes, the end of the week. >> all right, like it. you know what goes with weather. >> sports? >> no, traffic! >> oh. >> and we've got a road alert to tell you about. we have a traffic alert if you take metro from the vienna station. one of the roads into the station's parking lot is about to get a new traffic pattern. starting tomorrow, part of saintsbury drive, which takes you into the station, will become a oneway street, so crews can widen that road. you now have to take nutley over to lee highway. that's going to get you over to vaden drive, and from there, you'll be able to access saintsbury once again. the new pattern will be in place until about june. and major changes are also coming this week at the metro station. the 19th street entrance will be closed on wednesday so crews can replace all three of its escalators. now, that entrance won't reopen for about eight months.

now, that may seem like a long time to fix three escalators, but metro says this is no small task. >> we've got to not only rip out the existing units, but in order to prepare the space for the new units coming in, there is work underneath with the trusses that has to be done. one of the steps involved is preserving an escalator at all times as a set of stairs to provide emergency egress here at this entrance. in addition to that, we put in a new spiral staircase and event shaft, so there are some emergency evacuation options. >> and during construction, you'll have to use the q street entrance to get in and out of the station. well, it's going to be hard for drivers to miss a warning from a celebrity chef in one part of the district. take a look at this. geoff tracy, owner of chef geoff's, he hired a sign spinner to twirl a sign reading "please slow down, speed camera in 500 feet, $150 fine." this is on foxhall road in northwest washington. tracy got the idea after he got three tickets himself in three

overnight, a prince george's county firefighter is recovering after being injured battling a house fire. the fire tore through a home in wingate drive in glendale just before 2:30 this morning. authorities say a female firefighter hurt her leg battling the flames. she was taken to the hospital in good condition. no one else was hurt in the fire. this morning, new york

police are investigating the death of a soap opera actor. the "new york post" is reporting that nick santino committed suicide. he appeared on "all my children" and "guiding light." the actor apparently was upset over the death of his dog. the pit bull was euthanized tuesday after noise complaints from neighbors. santino wrote "rocco trusted me and i failed him. he didn't deserve this." the "new york post" reports police found santino in his bedroom and it appeared he overdosed on pills. well, if you have a bruce springsteen fan shut out of tickets at his upcoming concert at the verizon center, you're certainly not alone. ♪ oh, baby, the laugh's on me >> tickets went on sale at 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning. just minutes later, the show was sold out. but it didn't take long for hundreds of tickets to find their way to stub hub for more than twice face value. ticketmaster says it was simply an issue of high demand.
